Garden Group - First Material Pickup

The people at Dixie Plywood & Lumber Company were kind enough to donate a ton of material for our container project.
The crew for today's pickup: Scott Capon, Matt Bannon, Justin Jablonski, Briana Johnson, and Ryan Melville.

Two forklifts were used in a combined effort to get all of the wood loaded into our truck.




Nelsy at Dixie Plywood & Lumber worked with Justin to put all of this together. Thanks Nelsy!

Some of the wood was a little too long to fit in the truck.

The sand blasted container is started to get a nice patina.

All of the wood is stored and ready to go.

Narrative

The container sits within a garden that serves the community. It supports the garden in what it needs to succeed as a place for the community to gather and promote healthy living along with organic practices. It's location adjacent to a park makes it an extension to the park, extending the green space and re-purposing it for fruitful endeavors.

Precedent Details


ETFE panels are mounted to a steel frame around each panel. the frame then has special brackets mounted to them that the panels attach to. These panels are then inflated to give a cushioned look that offers additional insulation to the building.


The copper strips are mounted onto furring channels that have additional triangular brackets mounted to them to define the angle of the strip. The strips can be mounted to the brackets by nails, interlocking folds, or even additional angle brackets. In the Signal box precedent, the triangular brackets have additional metal that is bent to create a sort of shelf that is welded directly to the back of the strip.


The screen panels offer a simple solution. A basic metal frame supports perforated panels that are connected via brackets. Each bay of the larger frame contained 6 or 9 panels. These panels are then connected to each other with additional brackets or directly with bolts depending on how the panels themselves are made.

Jacksonville Observations


1. Each container has a Information panel with pertinent information from manufacture date to weight values. This container was manufactured in April 2000


2. Twist locks have an angled top to feed into the corner casings.


3. Door hinges are localized small metal rods meaning the doors can be easily removed.


4. C channels for floor framing are open underneath. Forklift pockets are defined by a metal plate.


5. Floors are modified on the far end to interlock with trailer. C channels are eliminated in center and plywood is replaced by metal.


6. Corner casings have holes on multiples sides to reduce weight and allow access to twist locks.


7. Containers longer than 40' have extra panels on each end that offer areas that are easier to remove  for openings.


8. Reefer units with condensers removed have a ready made opening.


9. One trip container is pristine apart from salt gathered on door hardware.


10. Metal wheels lock into corner casings to let containers be moved with ease.


11. Remnants of metal shot used to blast containers.


12. Metal frames inserted directly into walls for openings. Hinges built directly into frames.
