Garden Group - First Material Pickup

The people at Dixie Plywood & Lumber Company were kind enough to donate a ton of material for our container project.
The crew for today's pickup: Scott Capon, Matt Bannon, Justin Jablonski, Briana Johnson, and Ryan Melville.

Two forklifts were used in a combined effort to get all of the wood loaded into our truck.




Nelsy at Dixie Plywood & Lumber worked with Justin to put all of this together. Thanks Nelsy!

Some of the wood was a little too long to fit in the truck.

The sand blasted container is started to get a nice patina.

All of the wood is stored and ready to go.

TASK 2: MOCK UP

1. Scale

The main concern with choosing a scale for the algae façade is determining the depth between the glass panels that is acceptable for algae growth. The panels from the precedence appear to be between 1”-1.5” max. Since this is such a small dimension to begin with, I would propose rather than changing the scale, just create (at full scale) a small portion of the full panel. About 10” by 12”

            3. Attach glass panels to the metal frame
            4. Weld or bolt metal frames together
            5. Fill with water and algae

Container Yard Observations

Sandblasting actually uses small metal balls instead of sand


This small metal actually gets recycled and reused












To send through sandblaster, they attach wheels to the bottom of the containers with a locking joint



Container yards actually have the ability to do renovations to container in house


Each container posts the max amount of weight they can hold


Each container must post its approved seal for transportation


Even the stands for the containers label how much weight they can hold


All lifting and stacking is done through two holes in one side of the container.


Containers at 9'6" are substantially high in price because they are considered custom


Yards use a track system to move containers around during renovations


Container Yards act as rent-able space for leasing companies


Interior framing for renovations are attached to both the floor and the ceiling
