Precedent Ideograms

These ideograms are from my study of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub by Santiago Calatrava..  The analytical sketch was done first (Views) which is exploring the way Calatrava allowed natural light and views to the city into the space.  The views are somewhat obstructed with the fins that create the envelope.  The second ideogram (Inside Vs Outside) is investigating infill between the fins.  Here I am showing the glazing.  Applying this to a container may produce some fenestration on the faces where daylight may enter while also giving opportunity to disguise the container.

These ideograms are looking at the Shanghai Tower by Gensler.  The first sketch (Repetition) is observing the repetition that is registered on the facade.  These linear elements break up the building into segments.  The second sketch (Boundary) is exploring how the skin/atrium is separated from the building core.  This concept may manifest in the container where the container resides in the center with other elements surrounding it creating an interstitial space.

These ideograms are based on the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership by Studio Gang.  The first concept I pulled out was how there are small apertures where the interior light escapes with high contrast to the exterior at night (Piercing Light).  The other sketch (Important Views) explores the location of full height glazing to allow specific framing of views to the adjacent region.  Siting the container to orient specific frames may be something to consider.  Also, what if the object (container) is used as some sort of beacon?
