Designing a Commons

These are some of the questions I am currently trying to work on answering for my MRP.
Some of them are similar to the questions the Professor posted a few days ago.
Please think about these as we move forward.
Thanks!

1) What is the social process of commoning that would take place through the design?

  • Who would use it?
  • How do they use it to collaborate or work together?
  • What kind of relationships would be created to enrich public life?

2) How would the design be sustained?
  • Does it require financial input or significant amounts of unpaid labor(volunteering)?
  • How would it keep its community of commoners engaged and involved in its upkeep?
  • Who would have ownership of it?

3) What kind of social, cultural, or material value would it create for the commoners that use it and how would it be ensured that the value it creates stays in their hands and is not capitalized upon?

  • What do the people gain from utilizing the commons?
  • Are they personal or community based benefits? Or both?
  • How can we ensure it will be a grassroots design and not top-down?

Take a gander at the Tragedy of the Commons (Bos and Bender will want you to read this eventually anyways).
