Re: Steel surplus and supply. Orlando

Will,
Sorry, I should not have sent these to you all. You do not need to order steel. I liked the stores tho. It seems that at least one of them is kind of self serve.

Regarding the confusion, I am as confused as you. I can't solve this, you all have to.

Bike group, am I correct that you have not settled on a design for the openings? I would like to see sketches (accurate, graph paper type sketches... Don't have to be Revit yet) of the door design(s). The doors discussed today are clever and constructable. Btw, if you angle the edges of the panels, then when they pivot out they can be made to meet at the point when one will support the other. If you are interested in what I mean I can send a sketch.

In order to get a engineers confirmation of the steel design I asked for sketches/drawings of the steel as you imagined it based on our conversations so I could go over it with the engineer. Sebastian did send me the top plate drawing but I did not get an updated set of drawings with it. The BIM 360 set was old and the midterm set was out of date (far as I knew). I had asked repeatedly for an updated PDF.

I also asked for communication from the groups about a Home Depot trip. I didn't know what bike group had decided about the wood, or what you needed (because of design discussions I had to assume the material list was out of date). So I was not going to go on my own and buy from your list. I needed someone from your group to communicate with me. When I arrived this morning I had the intention of going to get material. I had arranged for Maggie to be available. This morning there were only a few team members present on site. These seemed to think wood was going to be obtained from Thomas Lumber. This seemed sensible. The donation issue was an unfortunate complication. Since work must continue over the weekend, you will have to buy at least some of the lumber; whatever you need to make progress.

Both groups:
Please let me know, in list form, what you have planned for the remaining days. As a way to plan and not get caught short, use the list of tasks to organize material needs. Especially what you cannot get yourselves. This let's me know what I need to approve for you or expect to get. I realize that this begins with steel and welders.
To prep for welding you will need grinding wheels (to clean the metal).

Communicate often.
Keep positive.
Peace.

i don't feel like i understand the implication of this email.

is this for extra free material or for the steel order we gave you?

are you still putting in the steel order?  i thought the steel order was put in already.

it's confusing when the plan changes from day to day.  based on conversations at the site on wednesday and through email thursday, we were under the impression that we would get material this morning with you and maggie.

  1. I'm not positive or negative, I'm just trying to figure out the actual state of affairs. What you outlined above shows your perception of the week's events, but I do not think that paints an accurate picture of the situation from our point of view. Since you posted this on the blog, I will post the perspective of our group (or myself as a member of the group) so that there will be a balanced record for posterity. We specifically stated we needed to go shopping Friday on Wednesday, and again on Thursday via email. As we never said anything to the contrary, I do not understand the assumption that we did not want to go. From a purely pragmatic position, you could have just asked us one of the twelve hours we were at the site this week if for any reason we had totally changed our steel order. We never once told you "don't order the steel on our list, because we are changing it" so I don't understand the assumption that it ever changed. Additionally, when we asked about getting supplies around 11AM on Friday, you said exactly what you said on Wednesday. It was obvious to us that you were not going to go with us to buy material. The plate and steel columns have remained the same since the roof collapse. The doors\walls are not the limiting factor; they could be anything. Since we haven't gotten anything on our material list or steel order, the changes we have been discussing with the doors are purely centered around how we can change the design to be faster, and use the scrap wood. Every door iteration has been using the same plate as the attaching point anyway. When we discussed the wood columns and skeleton, it wasn't a design argument between the group, it was me trying to think of a way to build anything besides the steel, which I figured then would never materialize. After speaking to you about the roll up door, you said you had to go order our steel, but in that discussion, nothing changed about our steel from a week earlier. then you sent the email about the steel suppliers, which indicated that you didn't order steel. so, why did you say you were going to order our steel at that moment, then now, say we have to update our drawing and BIM model? the only conclusion i can draw, is that we are never going to get steel or a welder, and that the container was basically scrap when the roof fell in.
