What Squatting Teaches Us About Housing Policy - CityLab. I squatted a townhouse in Rotterdam in 1992. I witnessed a different attitude toward social value of private property. There were different types of squatters. Many gave back to the city thru service to others and care for the environment (peace punks). Some were just mean and viscous (Oi! punks). Either way, because it was not illegal to squat (kraken) those who did it protected and even repaired otherwise abandoned property, keeping a hold on some rough parts of the city. Squatting became illegal in Nederland in 2010, a victory over the Commons for private property rights. I can't wait to read this book.
