Transformation in detail. Envelope Assembly Mock up Project P1X1

I have edited this post since the email. edits are (mostly) in red.

This relatively quick project models the process we follow for the whole semester. Idea>research>investigate>plan>aquire>model>refine>implement.
Something like that, and not always in that order. It can't always be so linear.

In this project, Wall Envelope Assembly Mock up Project, for each of your three precedent project detail candidates follow these steps.

Task 1. Accumulate information about the products in your detail. Find manufacturers and gather specifications, typical details, etc. Call, email, contact in some way the manufacturers, probably through product representatives, to acquire material samples. Also, find any information; step by step instructions, videos, etc, that show the process involved with the material. This can be DIY, instructable style information or, manufacturer/material association information depending on your project. This might include sources of recycleable/upcycleable material (junk).

As a benefit of this project, you are instigating a materials collection. Someday we will have something like this?

Back to the tasks at hand...

Task 2. Devise a way to make a version, a mock up.

  1. Scale? It is unlikely that you will build full scale. What scale best suits the detail and the process? Half scale? 3" = 1'-0"? Other? Choose a scale and describe why it is best.
  1. Method? Imagine how you will go about making this detail, step by step. Write these steps out.
  1. Draw it. It will take many sketches to work this out; some plan, some elevation, some three-dimensional, some diagrams. Move freely between them. I want to see your thought process in drawing.
  1. Make a material list. From your drawings you will know what material you need to make this detail. Sometimes you need to make a jig or formwork to compete a system. This is all part of it. (components, fasteners, adhesives, coatings, etc)
  1. Make a tool list. In our to pull this off you will need tools. Make a list.
  1. An appropriate image of the precedent envelope system including a basic project identification information caption.
  1. A statement about the detail and what is important about it, what you are working on. A list of the materials in this system and possible sources.
  1. Images of materials and information about material manufacturers, suppliers that you are obtaining samples from. Information you have found about how the materials are sourced, made, constructed, etc. Include links.
  1. Drawings that show how you either it out and how you will pull it off.
  1. Material list.
  1. Tool list.
  • Acquire material and go.
  • Document process. Document well, pictures and videos.
  • Critique outcome.
  • Pros/cons/solutions.

Post this to the blog.

Next up...
Coming out of our class review on Monday you will build it. A summary of these steps is below.

You will present your process and product. As a class we will take pleasure in the results.
