The idea is to reuse the container's flooring plywood as material for a truss roof system. The plywood would be cut to create various truss profiles. After reattaching the original roof material (now cut in pieces), the variance in truss profiles creates openings in the roof to allow light to come in and heat to escape. If the space is to be conditioned, I am thinking of using a translucent material, perhaps a plastic to fill the open spaces between the trusses and roof panels.
The metal roofing and trusses would ideally continue beyond the exterior walls, providing shading, and perhaps a top connecting point for other secondary skin systems.
In my mind, I want this to be a sort of second coming of the Florida vernacular home: tin roof, cross breeze, porches for shading are updated and applied to our shipping container project.
The pictures below show a light and shadow study model, and is an example, but not the final design of the system.
